5 Things I Love for Friday #95

Originally posted on December 14, 2007

An all-music edition.

  1. Ratatat’s latest mixtape - It’s fun. And not like Ratatat’s other music. You should download it for free while it lasts.
  2. Biffy Clyro’s Puzzle - Best album I’ve snagged in awhile. All songs are great. How I always wished the Foo Fighters would sound (minus their first release, the all-Grohl album, which I by default love because I was still mourning Nirvana). If Weezer and Foo Fighters got into a tussle, this would be the sound, methinks. Been on repeat all week.
  3. John Coltran’s Blue Train - I’m a jazz idiot. I know very little about jazz music beyond what I like and don’t like. When I first grabbed Blue Train it didn’t thrill me. Too all-over the place. Fast forward four or five years and I think it’s genius. Great to design to.
  4. Hit the Lights - Unabashed pop punk that still gets me. Two stand-out tracks from their first album are particularly boss, “Three Oh Nine” and “Bodybag”. Catchy as hell, infectious for sure. Bonus points for being Lima, Ohio natives.
  5. RX Bandits Resignation - Admittedly I find the first half of the disc much stronger, but I’ve been rocking this whole album lately. Kinda late-era/new ska meets pop punk? Not quite sure how to shoehorn that into a category. Fun music though.

I'm second-generation Irish, I think. My grandfather on my mother's side was from Breaghwy in Co. Mayo. I'm now working on getting my Irish citizenship, to prove that my fire hydrant-shaped body is genetic. I swear.
